NAIROBI EXCURSIONS

Half-Day Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage Tour

Visiting the sanctuary which overlooks Nairobi National Park, you will gain an educational insight into this fascinating organisation, as you listen to the keepers and enjoy the animals that are extremely habituated.

Half-Day Karen Blixen Museum and the Giraffe Centre Tour

Upon arrival you feel you are on the set of Out of Africa as you visit the simple colonial farmhouse full of items that Karen Blixen chose and touched herself. From here visit the Giraffe Centre, where the highly endangered Rothschild giraffe lives in peace. With an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform, this tour is wonderful for children.

Half-Day Nairobi National Park Tour

Just 10km from the city centre, this is Kenya’s oldest park. With over 500 varieties of birds and more than 100 mammal species, it makes a great early morning or late afternoon’s excursion away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Common sightings include zebra, giraffe, buffalo, ostrich, gazelle, eland, hippo, vulture, black rhino and lion.

MOMBASA EXCURSIONS

Full-Day Mombasa City Tour

With a fascinating history dating back to 200 AD, Mombasa is the largest port in East Africa. Your day takes you down an intriguing maze of cobbled streets, past overhanging balconies and through mysterious doorways to bustling markets filled with exotic spice, fruit and colourful fabric. Visit the Akamba wood carvers and enjoy lunch on the Tamarind Dhow. In the late afternoon visit Haller Park, a former quarry now reforested and stocked with animals. Half-day tours are also available.

Tamarind Evening Dhow Trip

Sipping sundowners and nibbling appetisers you sail to Tudor creek. The evening on board the Arab dhow includes a delightful meal prepared by the chefs from the Tamarind Restaurant and a live band, playing popular tunes for dancing under a canopy of stars.

Full-Day Wasini Kisite Dhow Trip

Departing by splendid dhow, the day is focused on relaxation, stunning surroundings and a little history. Highlights include snorkelling in Kisite Marine Park to spot dolphins and possibly turtles, looking at marine-life from a glass-bottomed boat, eating fresh seafood for lunch, a historical tour around Wasini fishing village and perhaps some relaxation under swaying coconut trees.

The Champagne Dhow Trip

Departing in the morning by dhow to Sand Island, the trip allows its guests to snorkel the coral reefs, relax and soak up the sunshine. An exquisite seafood mezze lunch awaits you and includes local catches of crab, calamari, prawns, sushumi and much more. Later, continue the cruise through exotic mangrove forests, enjoying sights of colourful birds and fishing villages before arriving back as the sun sets.

Overnight at Shimba Hills Lodge

About an hour’s drive from Mombasa, Shimba is covered by beautiful forest foliage and feels cooler than the coast. Your afternoon game drive may include sightings of elephant, buffalo, roan and giraffe and if you are lucky, the rare sable antelope. Spend the evening relaxing in the romance of the lodge. Depart the next day after breakfast.

Overnight excursion to Mwazaro Beach

This two day excursion is truly a cultural experience where guests will enjoy time with members of the Digo Tribe, an excursion through the Ramisi River delta system and a dhow trip to Kisite Marine Park. There is even the possibility of snorkelling with turtles and dolphins. The food is fresh and delightful and accommodation first-class.

Fort Jesus By Night

You depart by traditional dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. Then from the Old Dhow Harbour a short guided walk brings you through the Old Town to Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593. Here a vibrant evening includes excellent cuisine and the re-enactment of East Africa’s turbulent history in an extravagant show.
