Southern and Western Tanzania - 1

The reserves in Southern and Western Tanzania are immense, extremely wild and remote.

On safari, you will discover rivers, swamps, forests, woodlands and savannah with abundant wildlife that seems to have changed little
over the centuries. Travel is by light aircraft or train. Come here for small intimate camps with excellent guides, a diverse range of
activities and to avoid the crowds. Also, make this your destination if you want to experience walking and fly-camping safaris as they
are among the best Africa offers.

Wild Nights in Selous

TOUR CODE RS3501

Visiting Selous is a far cry from almost any other park in Africa. For here you are always conscious of the huge tract of wild Africa that surrounds you. The lodges are all unique but it is the walking and fly-camping that undoubtedly cast the strongest spell. Days are spent on foot exploring old elephant paths and evenings in the open, at a campfire with an uninterrupted cacophony of African calls all around you.

Safari Routing

01 Afternoon flight from Dar or Zanzibar to Selous, followed by four days filled with walking safaris, game drives and boat trips. There are no fixed itineraries but two of these nights will be spent in a remote fly-camp, accompanied by a guide, chef and camp assistants.

05 Morning activity, lunch and afternoon flight to Zanzibar. Transfer to Stone Town.

06 Morning guided walk through Stone Town and its historic buildings and markets. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

07 Transfer for your onward journey.

Fly-camps are always temporary, set up as requested in remote corners of the park. Ideal for two to six guests, the emphasis is on walking and tracking animals
through forests, open plains and along the sandy shores of meandering rivers and oxbow lakes. It is a magical experience but not for everyone, as tents are
simple, though comfortable, and animals wander around camp at night. There are hot bucket-showers and toilet facilities are ‘long-drop’ style. With all its bush
charm, most people find fly-camping a very enriching experience.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a very short flight from Dar es Salaam and makes the perfect beach add-on to any southern safari. There are many accommodation options to choose from, however, Mapenzi Beach Resort or Ocean Paradise Resort may be ones to look at first.

Upgrade option

For those who wish to upgrade to Selous Safari Camp, please contact us for the additional cost. Selous Safari Camp is a delightful little camp that is very comfortable, has an excellent reputation for its cuisine and provides some of the best guides in the region.

Saadani National Park

Tanzania's most recently gazetted national park, Saadani is the only national park in East Africa with ocean frontage and therefore, the only place that can genuinely lay claim to offering beautiful beaches and safari in a single location. Geographically it is the closest National Park to both Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar and as it is a coastal park it is the only place one can see wildlife and birdlife interacting on the coast. There are at least 24 species of large mammals found here and the beach area is a breeding ground for the green turtle. The safari lodge is comfortably furnished and delightfully perched on the edge of the ocean, a stones-throw from all the wonders of the park. For those interested in fly-camping here, please contact us.
