| Zanzibar:
a slumbering lush paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice, cinnamon,
vanilla, chillies, turmeric, nutmeg and coconuts still grow wild today.
It is idyllic, romantic, exotic and hot. With powder white sands and
coral atolls, few countries have such an allure as this historic Spice
Island. Whether you seek exquisite beaches and sunshine or fascinating
culture, you will find them all here. Around its idyllic coves you
will discover an excellent choice of accommodation, from character
guest houses to 5 star hotels. Further afield, over 50 islands adorn
the tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean. Here, you will find swaying
palm trees, picturesque tidal beaches, perfect coral reefs and some
tiny rustic retreats. |

Flanked by the
ocean, Stone Town is steeped in history. It is a fascinating warren
of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge, intricately carved
wooden doors with their brass studs and heavy locks. Trading in
the bazaars and markets is not for the faint-hearted as the excitement
is overwhelming and the air is always full of the pungent perfumes
of exotic spices. There are also fruit, vegetable, fish and meat
markets, where visitors can easily lose themselves in discovering
new styles of produce and ways to shop.
Access to Zanzibar
is a simple flight from Nairobi, Mombasa, Arusha or Dar es Salaam.
So, adding on a few days of culture, diving or simple relaxation
after a safari is very easy to arrange. We highly recommend a few
nights in Stone Town, followed by time to relax on one of its idyllic
beaches.

| On the
outskirts of town are many places of historic interest including
the Maruhubi Palace, formerly the Sultans harem, Mangapwani
Village, the former site of the notorious slave pits and many
captivating hideaways and pretty gardens. The famous 19th
century explorers Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Speke and
Grant all began their fateful journeys into the dark
interior from here. |
